Elmhurst Tai Chi and Ki Kong

Elmhurst's Tai Chi program began in fall of 1999, and expanded to the Elmhurst Memorial Health System in 2000. The program currently has over 25 active continuing memebers, and hundreds of participants over the years. In spring of 2004 we began to offer separate classes in Ki Kong (Chi Kong). Classes are currently offered at Courts Plus and the Elmhurst Memorial Health Education Center in Villa Park.

What is Tai Chi and Ki Kong?

Tai Chi Chuan is a form of Qi Gong and is a traditional martial art, being a branch of the sport of “Wu Shu” . It has been used in China since the 16th century as a means of keeping fit and preventing and curing diseases. Tai Chi is characterised by slow, graceful movement. The gentle movements of this art make it appropriate for participants at any age or fitness level.

You can expect to improve your balance, co-ordination and strength. Tai Chi is proven to delay the onset of falling in the elderly. Classes consist of a warm up of Qi Gong exercises, and learning the “Yang Style 24 Posture Short Form”. Students cover sections 1 to 4 in the beginner’s classes, and progress to sections 5 to 8 in the continuing classes.

Qi Gong is one of the rich cultural heritages of China and Korea, it is a system of physical and mental exercise designed to promote health and wellness. The program is designed to stimulate the brain, realign the spine and help the body reestablish a natural symetrical balance.

You can expect to improve, flexibility, metabolism and blood circulation, musculatory control, stress reduction and increased blood oxidisation. You can also expect the feeling of positive energy and the release of tension in the body.

Classes consist of stretching, breathing and dynamic motion. All exercises are conducted standing with minimal walking. You will learn to harmonize your breathing with gentle rhythmic movement.
